Beyond the technologies of cooperations, there is also the process and how these technologies are implemented to create successful results.

MIT has a very interesting video, where - at 15:40 - Frank Douglas (Executive Director, MIT Center for Biomedical Innovation) presents how Aventis used these technologies and processes to foster Innovation.
This is "cooperation inside", with examples of:

  • de-centralising some of the work to various location around the world to accelerate innovation, and to create a culture of entrepreneurs inside the company,
  • building internal communities to share informaton and optimise the work.

Some findings from this experiment:

  • use matrix organisations,
  • build tension in the objectives,
  • nurture a culture where people focus less on what they control and more on what they contribute,
  • and while this is hard to implement, one trick to getting traction is to get the proper reward system based on what is being contributed.
